About

by Michael Alexander on February 25, 2008

I’ve been a writer and editor in the Boston area for about 25 years. In that time, I’ve written more than enough copy to fill a black hole. As an editor, I’ve launched publications and Web sites; hired and supervised editorial, art and production staffs; administered budgets; created editorial calendars; assigned articles and everything else you might expect a savvy editor to do.

mja1My freelance articles on consumer electronics, personal computers and other tech topics have appeared in Popular Science, Sport, Video, Nation’s Business, Boston, Home Entertainment, Jacksonville Monthly and a bunch of other consumer and trade pubs. My weekly “Home Tech” column on consumer electronics ran in The Boston Globe from about 1985 to 1995.

I’ve also written a ton of marketing and PR copy, Web banner ads, brochures, customer profiles, case studies, PowerPoint presentations, white papers, video scripts—you name it.

Here’s where I worked before I struck out on my own:

  • Multimedia Publisher, Telecommunications
  • Editor-in-Chief, Application Development Trends
  • Executive Editor, The Yankee Group
  • Marketing Communications Manager, EMC
  • Managing Editor, Datamation
  • Editor-in-Chief, InfoSecurity News
  • Senior Editor, Advanced Technology, Computerworld
  • Editor-in-Chief, Bartex Publishing (Dealerscope, PC Retailing and Home Entertainment Marketing)

Books

I’ve written a couple of books. The one thing my books have in common is they are aimed at translating technically challenging topics into everyday English:

The Underground Guide to Computer Security (Addison-Wesley, 1996) looks at how individuals and small businesses can protect themselves against all manner of tech threats.

Net Security: Your Digital Doberman (Ventana Press, 1997) looks at how small and medium-sized digital merchants can protect their Web storefronts.

Awards

  • I’ve received several awards, either as an individual or as part of a group, from the American Society of Business Press Editors for magazine editorial and design work when I worked at Bartex Publishing Group and Cahners (1982 to 1994).
  • I was also a member of the editorial team that won the American Business Media’s Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award for Datamation Plugged-In when I was at Datamation in 1996.
  • I received a Silver Ozzie from FOLIO for “Best Redesign, Trade Magazine” for EMC’s Access Magazine (2001).
  • While editor-in-chief of Application Development Trends, my staff and I won the Web Marketing Association’s 2004 and 2006 WebAward for “Outstanding Achievement in Website Development” and Honorable Mention in the Min’s “Best of the Web 2005 Awards: Integration with Print category.”

Education

  • Boston University, Boston, Mass., M.S. in mass communication, 1982
  • Boston University, Boston, Mass., A.B. in political science, 1974
  • The American University of Paris, Paris, France, A.A. in liberal arts, 1970

I also spent a year at Schiller International University in Paris in 1971 and 1972 pretending I was majoring in international relations. Actually, I spent most of that time sitting at my usual table at Les Deux Magots philosophizing about being and nothingness.
